PROTOTYPING

WEDGED WONDERS

PROTOTYPING  |  WEDGED WONDERS

Well, since our last update about prototyping our subzero 70’s wedge desk, the Wedged Wonders, we have started the second part of the proces, engineering and sometimes partly redesigning parts we have overlooked or miscalculated.

It is amazing to see that what seems to work in your mind not always works in reality! After milling the 5 parts, 3 desktop parts and 2 legs, out of thick laminated pieces of MDF, we found out that the legs wouldn't slide properly into the desktop slots. The milling machine also couldn’t cope with the depth of the gills and some of the more challenging angles.

But hey, we are in 2023 so we decided to 3D print the redesigned parts first to see if that would work. And… it did! Now we can mill the adjusted designs out of MDF again to find out if it works just as good on a 1:1 scale. We can't wait to see it in full scale, begin molding the body shells and start the final fases.

But that's a whole chapter of its own with milling parts out of POM, milling the two bonnets out of a massive piece of aluminium, fabricating the ‘push’ buttons and their locking mechanism, painting all parts, cover the compartments with the famous ‘mousehair’ cloth and assemble all pieces!

So stay tuned, and if you have a suggestion for the color combination of our first prototype, please drop us a DM, we might go along with it.
