JET AGE JUGGERNAUT | ROLLING ROCKETS
Going to the moon and flying beyond the stars. During the 1950’s architecture, cars, and gadget design took on a curiously spaceflight-inspired aesthetic.

Manufacturers built vehicles with ornamental tailfins and parabola canopy greenhouses. Logos incorporated starbursts and satellite shapes, while parallelograms, wings, and free- form boomerangs became the motel sign shapes du jour. In retrospect, those designs look a little gimmicky, but they nonetheless reflect a collective 1950s confidence about the world’s dazzling future in space flight and economic prosperity.

Men like Virgil Exner, Harley Earl, and most famously Raymond Loewy dictated and implemented this design language into the automobile. The notorious tailfin helped rocket sales of all models designed by these three legends. Other elements to be held synonymous with 1950’s car-styling were the wraparound windscreen, massive use of chrome, and the two-tone paint schemes. Even the Museum of Modern Art described one of their cars as ‘a work of art’ which perfectly sums up why these cars deserve a tribute by Ultimo Parri.
