ENGINEERING EXTRAORDINAIRE

ENGINEERING EXTRAORDINAIRE  |  LESS IS MUCH MORE

The very first Grand Prix de Monaco was held in 1929. The English driver, and WW2 Special Agent, William ‘W Williams’ Grover-Williams won it with a green Bugatti Type 35B.

Already an established brand by then, Bugatti presented their new racecar in 1924. Ettore’s fastidious attention to detail and fixation on weight and size reduction resulted in this beautifully designed and engineered ‘35’ which became the most successful racecar of all times. With over 2.000 races in a 10-year period, from 1924 up until 1934, it is never going to be beaten! The car featured some remarkable innovations like the hollow front axle, leaf springs passing through the axle instead of bolted together with U-shape brackets, and aluminium wheels.

The engine was a straight-eight with ball bearings that allowed it to rev to 6.000 rpm and produced some 90 horsepower in its original form. The later introduced 35B delivered 140 horsepower due to forced induction by a large supercharger. With this racecar, Bugatti also introduced the final version of the signature horseshoe-shaped grille which was actually inspired by an egg and not by Ettore’s love for horses.

Being an iconic racecar that won the Targa Florio 5 times in a row and the French and Australian GP 4 times, without a doubt it deserves an Ultimo Parri tribute.
