LA STORIA

State funding enabled Mercedes and Auto Union to compete in building the fastest, mightiest, record-shattering racing machines. The silver arrows were shooting over the purpose-built AVUS track (Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungs- Straße). This very first stretch of highway in history had turning loops on each end, with the ‘Nord Kurve’ being transformed into an epic sloped brickyard in 1936. Looking down from the ‘Mercedes Tower’, the spectators watched the roaring monsters like the Auto Union Type-C push its gigantic supercharged V16 engine to its limits. It was here where the German squadron prepared itself to take the racing world by storm. Entering an era of brutal domination, on-track racing, as well as hill climbs, all over the world.

OPERATION

The hand crank is fitted, through the opening within the Nord Kurve, into the socket on the supercharger. Turning it starts a series of hidden gears and axles to turn, raising or lowering the desk top.

DRIVETRAIN

The drivetrain is inspired by the mighty supercharged V16 engine of the Auto Union Type-C. The supercharger drives the power through the main drive shaft to each end of the desk. The majestic V16 exhausts, rotating around the drive shaft, eliminate any lateral movement of the desktop during adjustment.

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

The drivetrain powers an axle between the friction dampers on each end of the desk. The rotating axles will actuate 4 spindle-driven scissor lifts, one inside each corner of the desk top.

DRAWERS

By turning the ‘Mercedes Tower’ dial next to the Nord Kurve, the spring-locked drawers are released.
Clockwise releases the right drawer, anticlockwise opens the left drawer.

AVUS RING

A scaled depiction of the AVUS, with its distinctive wall of death, is placed in the center of the desk top, splitting the glass right through the middle.

CHASSIS

The tubular frame of the Auto Union chassis is translated further in the slanted double legs, inspired by the distinctive double rear wheels of the Type-C hill climb car. The legs are joined to the chassis through the T-brackets, derived from the car’s unique front suspension.
