LA STORIA

The very beginning of motor racing history began with spectacular endurance raids. In times when cars were still a rare and strange novelty for the very rich, motor racing was all about durability and mechanical reliability.

The world was for many a vast mystical place, and the industrial revolution had sparked men to discover it with new technological innovations, gaining momentum by the birth of the motor car. The 1907 Peking-to-Paris Transcontinental Motor Raid was a herculean undertaking by any standard. An international field of just 5 vehicles started the absurd 14.994 km (9.317 miles) journey, with only 4 finishing in Paris after 61 and even 81 days.

OPERATION

The hand crank, originally used to crankstart the engine, is now directly operating the chain gear to adjust the desk top height. Large gears and chains were the predominant method of transferring power to the axles in the first motor cars.

DRIVE TRAIN

The chain drive transmits power, through an axle, differential, and shaft, towards the large center differential. This is where power is divided equally to the 2 driveshafts, a feature derived from the very first 4-wheel drive system of the groundbreaking 1903 Spyker 60-HP

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

The driveshafts turn a spindle out of the transverse differentials, pushing the front and rear axles outwards. They are mounted on the leaf springs that pivot around the bottom, and push the desktop upwards.

TRUNK

The storage compartment on the desk is inspired by the original leather trunk carried on the running board of the Spyker, made by renowned luxury brand Louis Vuitton. Its exterior is made of the finest leather with brass ornaments. Sliding it open reveals a plush-lined storage compartment with a separate dock for keeping the hand crank.

NORTH-EASTERN HEMISPHERE

A map of the 1907 Peking-to-Paris route is crafted in stained glass. It depicts an elaborate north-eastern hemisphere, containing each of the 18 cities along the entire 14.994 km long trip.

CHASSIS

The elegant legs are the result of a functional reinterpretation of the conventional sturdy ladder chassis, the reliable backbone of cars since the very dawn of automotive history.
